SAMSUNG • APPLE
With a stunning screen and impressive power, Samsung’s Galaxy S8 is, without doubt, the best smartphone of 2017.
But it seems even with its curvaceous design and top-notch camera it still can’t beat its arch-rival – the iPhone 7.
According to latest reports, Apple’s smartphone has taken the top spot as the best selling smartphone of the year so far.
The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are officially the biggest sellers in the United States for the three-month period ending in April.
The news comes from stats released by insight company Kantar, who say the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus currently hold a combined market share of 20.1 per cent in the US.
The total iPhone share grew 5.8 points year-on-year to hit 36.5 per cent.
Apple also saw a 1.1-point gain in sales in Great Britain, Germany, France, Italy and Spain.
Many experts were speculating that both of Apple’s flagships were not performing quite as US technology giant had expected.
The Cupertino-based company is believed to have slashed iPhone production by 10% at the start of this year to account for a drop in demand.
This was followed by the news that Apple sold fewer iPhones than expected in the first three months of the year.
Apple sold 50.76 million iPhones in its fiscal second quarter, down from 51.19 million a year earlier.

When asked about the dip in iPhone sales, Apple CEO Tim Cook pointed to the growing hype around the next iPhone.
The CEO was pressed by UBS analyst Steve Milunovich, who referred to a recent survey that found iPhone purchase intent had hit a nine-year low.
Mr Cook replied: “I only glanced at it and so I haven’t had time to study it.
“But in general, we’re seeing what we believe to be a pause in purchases on iPhone, which we believe are due to the earlier and much more frequent reports about future iPhones.
“And so that part is clearly going on, and it could be what’s behind the data. I don’t know, but we are seeing that in full transparency.”
However the latest data shows Apple is still outperforming its rivals in the United States.
Following the launch of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus, Samsung has seen a drop in sales, according to the Kantar data.
