Earlier this year, Sony moved away from its Z-series branding and replaced it with X-series. It launched a handful of smartphones under the same series, called Xperia X, Xperia X Compact, Xperia XA and Xperia X Performance. Now, Sony has launched a new flagship smartphone called Xperia XZ, which the company showcased earlier this month at the IFA 2016 in Berlin. With top of the line specifications, the smartphone will compete with the likes of the highly popular Samsung Galaxy S7, OnePlus 3 and the LeEco Le Max2. We compared all four smartphones based on their price, specifications and features, and here’s how they fare.

Price and availability: The Xperia XZ will set you back by Rs 49,990 and will be available to purchase exclusively via Amazon India and Sony’s retail stores. Pre-orders start on October 1, and it will go on sale starting October 10. For those pre-ordering the smartphone, Sony will be giving away the SmartBand Talk (SWR30), three months of Sony LIV subscription worth Rs 349 and Modern Combat 5 credits worth Rs 780, all for free. In comparison, the Samsung Galaxy S7 is priced at Rs 43,400, the OnePlus 3 is priced at Rs 27,999 and LeEco Le Max2 is priced at Rs 22,999 (32GB variant) and Rs 29,999 (64GB variant).

Display: The Sony Xperia XZ flaunts a 5.2-inch full HD (1080p) display with pixel density of 424ppi and Corning Gorilla Glass 4 protection, whereas the OnePlus 3 sports a 5.5-inch full HD display. The Galaxy S7 flaunts a 5.1-inch QHD super AMOLED display, whereas the Le Max2 sports a slightly larger  5.7-inch QHD IPS LCD display. Clearly, from the screen resolution point of view, Samsung and LeEco are ahead compared to the Xperia XZ, and also the OnePlus 3.

Chipset and RAM: The Xperia XZ, OnePlus 3 and Le Max2 are all powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 quad-core chipset (four custom kryo cores), paired with Adreno 530 GPU. Sony has equipped the Xperia ZR with 3GB of RAM, OnePlus 3 has 6GB of RAM, whereas the Le Max2 comes with 4GB/6GB of RAM (depending on the variant). The Galaxy S7, on the other hand, runs Samsung’s homebrew Exynos 8890 64-bit octa-core paired with 4GB of RAM. RELATED: Samsung Galaxy S7 Review: The perfect smartphone money can buy

Storage: Sony’s smartphone comes with 64GB onboard storage, whereas the Samsung Galaxy S7 comes with 32GB onboard storage. Both smartphones also include a microSD card slot for further expansion up to 256GB. While OnePlus 3 comes with 64GB onboard storage, Le Max2 has 32GB and 64GB onboard storage options. Sadly, neither of the smartphones support expandable storage option.

Camera: One of the highlights of the Xperia XZ is the 23-megapixel rear camera (24mm wide-angle G Lens) with 5-axis stabilization, predictive hybrid auto-focus, LED flash and 4K video recording capabilities. For selfies and video calling, the smartphone features a 13-megapixel front-facing camera with f/2.0 aperture, and wide-angle lens. The OnePlus 3 features a 16-megapixel rear camera with dual LED flash, and 4K video recording capabilities, and an 8-megapixel selfie camera. ALSO READ – Samsung Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 Edge camera sensor with dual pixel technology explained in-depth

Samsung has equipped the Galaxy S7 with a 12-megapixel camera with dual pixel technology. With aperture of f/1.7, it also features PDAF, optical image stabilization (OIS) and a 1.4um pixel sensor to ensure good low light performance. It also includes support for 4K video recording and slow motion capture. For selfie lovers, a 5-megapixel selfie camera of aperture f/1.7 is also present.

Coming to Le Max2, you get a slightly larger resolution 21-megapixel rear camera of aperture f/2.0, with support for PDAF, optical image stabilization (OIS) and 4K video recording capabilities. Up front, there is an 8-megapixel front-facing camera for selfies and video calling.

Battery and connectivity: The Xperia XZ is armed with a 2,900mAh battery along with a dedicated Stamina Mode and quick charge support. The Galaxy S7 and OnePlus 3 are equipped with 3,000mAh batteries, whereas the LeEco Le Max2 sports a slightly larger 3,100mAh battery with support Quick Charge 3.0.

In terms of connectivity, all smartphones include dual SIM card slots, 4G LTE with VoLTE support, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth and GPS. The OnePlus 3, Xperia XZ and Le Max2 also feature a USB Type-C connector for charging and data transfer. LeEco is also using the same port as audio output on headphones.

Operating system: All smartphones run on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow OS wrapped under their respective custom UI. Samsung has TouchWiz UI running atop, OnePlus has OxygenOS 3, Sony has its customized UI, whereas LeEco has its EUI.

Miscellaneous features: All smartphones feature unibody designs. Sony has glass on the front, polycarbonate frame and metal back, whereas Samsung has front and back glass design with metal frame. LeEco and OnePlus, on the other hand, feature full metal unibody design. Both Samsung Galaxy S7 and Sony Xperia XZ also feature IP68 certification for water and dust resistance. Samsung has also added always-on display, and heart rate sensor just sits besides the camera module. All four smartphones also include fingerprint scanner for biometric authentication. Sony, has however, placed the fingerprint scanner within the power / sleep button, which rests on the right edge.

On paper, the Xperia XZ does look like a worthy competitor with top-of-the-line specifications and features. Having priced it significantly higher than its competition, it will be an uphill climb for Sony.
